Van Gogh

We are studying Van Gogh this term. So far, we have studied two of his paintings. The first one is The Starry Night:

Starry Night
By McKenna

Van Gogh painted Starry Night from the window of his asylum. Van Gogh did a couple of crazy things. First, he cut off part of his left ear and gave it to a lady. Second, he killed himself.

In this painting, he has shown a lot of it smaller to show that it is in the distance. This painting has a tree or bush in the front. He has drawn it large to show it is in the front. The church is in the center of the town. The sky is filled with swirls (wind) and stars. What I like about this painting is how the wind swirls and how the moon is giving off so much light.

The second painting we have studied is The Chair and The Pipe:

The Chair and the Pipe
By Keegan

This painting was supposed to be when Van Gogh invited an artist friend named Gauguin over to his house. They sat about and talked about their ideas, but then they got in an argument and they wouldn't talk to each other. Finally, the other artist left. Van Gogh painted his chair very ordinary and simple and painted Gauguin's chair very fancy and ornate. Van Gogh was trying to make a point that he was more simple and not as worldly as Gauguin. The chairs in the two paintings were turned away from each other to show that they were in an argument.

Your critiques of Van Gogh were great, McKenna and Keegan. You really learned a lot about him didn't you?
